Unfortunately, most teams face ice, contaminated water, fast water, etc., for the first time during a real emergency. With training, you can be prepared with the right equipment, procedures, mutual aid communications, and contingency plans. This can make the difference between life and death on the part of both the victim and rescuer.

This will be the best surface Ice course you ever take – at least that’s what our students tell us.

DAY ONE – Indoor Lecture

Like all of our training programs, the two-day ice seminar is custom designed to meet your department’s individual needs; with foundation topics that are always covered. These include:

1. Hypothermia prevention, recognition and pre-hospital care for the rescuer
2. Immersion hypothermia and drowning prevention and pre-hospital care for the rescuer and the victim.
3. Proper ice rescue techniques:
   a. line handling and tethers
   b. ice pole techniques for rescuer and victim
   c. exposure equipment
   d. planned and improvisational flotation devices
   e. ice rescue SOPs
   f. re-warming rescuer and victim
   g. cold water resuscitation and BLS
   h. contingency planning
   i. multiple emergency
   j. unexpected personnel emergency
   k. dehydration and hypothermia
   l. EMS protocol for cold water drowning
   m. what transport devices work (sleds, etc.) and which ones don’t
   n. building a water/ice rescue jump kit
   o. how to avoid wasting money when purchasing ice rescue equipment
   p. guidelines for awareness, operations and technician levels
   q. Hands-on practice sessions – establishing victim buoyancy, use of transport device, etc.
   r. and much more!

DAY TWO – On-site Hands-on Rescue Training

No standing around watching manufacturer demonstrations – all students work through 6-8 hands-on drill stations. You learn by doing, not by watching.
Six to eight Stations are set up on the ice and shore where rescuers engage in live action scenarios, using ice poles, surface suits, fire hoses, sleds, rescue throw ropes, roll-up straps, any gear they are currently using, boats, ice crawlers, knives, etc. Participating EMS will constantly be involved in hands-on scenarios using child and infant mannequins as well as staged hypothermic and dive accident live victims. Everyone who wants to get in the water and be on the ice will have the opportunity. The day ends with a written examination and debriefing.

The fee for the two-day seminar is based on your reported enrollment numbers and is broken down as follows.

Travel costs: The “base travel cost” is based on the host’s location. Once the class size reaches 35 students additional instructors are needed. Hence, there is a $75 travel increase per enrollment increment which is calculated below. For example, a class with a base travel cost of $200 and an enrollment of 50 students would require the $200 base travel cost plus $300 for a total of $500 travel costs.

Up to 30 students: $2,950 plus travel costs (hereafter referred to as ‘base travel costs’), and two hotel rooms for two nights

Up to 35 students: $3,100, plus base travel costs plus $75, and two hotel rooms for two nights

Up to 40 students: $3,250, plus base travel costs plus $150, and three hotel rooms for two nights

Up to 45 students: $3,400, plus base travel costs plus $225, and three hotel rooms for two nights

Up to 50 students: $3,550, plus base travel costs plus $300, and three or four hotel rooms for two nights.

Up to 55 students: $3,700 plus base travel costs plus $375, and three or four hotel rooms for two nights.

Up to 60 students: $3,850 plus base travel costs plus $450, and three or four hotel rooms for two nights.

Up to 65 students: $4,000 plus base travel costs plus $525, and three or four hotel rooms for two nights.

Up to 70 students: $4,250 plus base travel costs plus $600, and three or four hotel rooms for two nights.

Up to 75 students: $4,400 plus base travel costs plus $675, and three or four hotel rooms for two nights.

We bring a minimum of three trainers, and most often bring four to six trainers.

A deposit of $500 is required a minimum of 60 days prior to the course. If that is not possible other arrangements can be made. Full course fee payment is required on or before the last day of the program.
Each participant will receive a certificate suitable for framing.
LGS/ACUC Certification cards available for purchase at class for $25 each. Cost is $26 each if purchased after the class.
PADI Surface Ice Rescue Technician Certification cards available for $25 each

Please note: In order to book and secure the best staff for your program, we must require hosts to report their expected enrollment level three weeks prior to the first day of class. While there may be an opportunity to update this number, this would be decided on a case-by-case basis. We STRONGLY recommend collecting a non-refundable deposit from outside departments to solidify your class and avoid sudden drop-outs or no-shows.

Get your department trained for free and make a profit! Teams usually charge $75 to $150 per participant. With possible quantity discounts, we recommend charging no less than $100 to teams who send many members. If EMS credit is desired, that can be arranged ahead of time.

If 50 students are registered then the host collects $3750 to $7500 depending on the price charged. The host typically nets over $1000 profit. If for example, the host puts 20 of their own members in the course in addition to 30 outsiders, then the 20 members are trained for free and there is still a profit. The best training available for free plus make a significant profit!!
